Wetsuits are made from neoprene. The thickness of the neoprene will affect the effectiveness of your wetsuit while scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, etc. Obviously, the colder the water, the thicker your wetsuit will need to be. Thinner wetsuits will generally have more mobility. Common neoprene thicknesses for scuba diving are 1mm, 3mm, 5mm, and 7mm. As a general rule, water warmer than 80 degrees, you'll be fine in a 1mm. Warmer than 75 degrees, 3mm is OK. 3mm works for 70ish and anything less than that, we recommend a 7mm. Keep in mind that these temperatures need to be considered at depth.
Also, a wetsuit needs to be snug. If a wetsuit is loose fitting, you will get water flow and this will basically render the wetsuit ineffective. The idea behind a wetsuit is to minimize any water from getting in and then leaving the wetsuit. The less this happens, the better. Remember, don't pee in your wetsuit until you're in the water! That's just wrong.
For kayaking the benefit of neoprene is that it will keep you very warm in the event that you decide to go for a swim or wade in the water while launching. We do not recommend using a regular full surf or dive wetsuit because there isn't sufficient mobility in these suits for paddling. Paddle johns are the neoprene suits that we recommend, they are sleeveless and provide the free range of motion needed for casting and paddling.
